The Richard Pablo Caldito Sr. Ball Park sits at the corner of Kahekili Highway and Halewaiu Road. It's a small park, about 2 acres. The park is mostly an open grassy area, and has a basketball court in the west corner and a shaded bench. There's a high fence on the north side which makes is a good spot for baseball and softball, though it does not have a baseball diamond. The park has one bathroom, a water fountain, and all parking is street parking.

The park was originally called Waihe'e Ball park, but was renamed to Richard Pablo Caldito Sr. Park in August, 2013, with the official naming ceremony in October, 2013. Some of the residents who lived nearby protested the name change at the time, saying the locals were not adequately consulted about the name change, and that the name change reduced its representation of the community's diversity.

Back in the 90s, I used to live out this way, and my brother I used to ride our bikes to this park to play. It's a nice wide open space, and great for any kid with imagination, and especially friends. It's a good place to set up some soccer goals, or play baseball or basketball. If the space is already occupied, see if you can join in. The people of Waihe'e are friendly and will be happy to have you around.

While doing research on this park, I found that a scholarship in Caldito's honor had been started by his family the same year the park was renamed, in partnership with the Maui Filipino Chamber of Commerce Foundation. In addition to the Caldito scholarship for students pursuing government work, the Maui Filipino Chamber of Commerce Foundation has offered $1000 scholarships to multiple high school and UH Maui students many times over the past 30 years. I encourage all high school seniors in Maui to apply for an award at http://www.mauifilipinochamber.com/scholarship/.
